It all started in 2016 with the creation of the spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) and the Centre for Artificial Intelligence at the University of Freiburg. The four founders had a clear vision: radically accelerating the energy revolution and developing solutions for environmentally friendly energy supply. The start-up was founded in Freiburg in Germany’s Black Forest region under the name of OXYGEN TECHNOLOGIES.
We developed our IT-Plattform ELEMENTS and the complementary modules, and got started with helping energy providers on the journey towards the digital, decentralised future of energy. With our support, they are unlocking new business models for new customer groups and working towards 100% environmentally friendly energy supply. From optimisation for self-generated energy and community power to peer-to-peer energy markets, our IT solutions support energy providers, meter operators and municipal utility companies every step of the way, delivering real value for end customers and digitalising the world of energy.
Our vision - A peer-to-peer energy market
Today, millions of small, decentralised energy systems are already installed in private households. As state-subsidised feed-in tariffs expire, the power generated by these systems will still need to be marketed and reliably fed into the grid.
We are convinced that peer-to-peer supply represents the future of the energy market. Our ELEMENTS platform connects consumers and generators, who trade energy with each other in an energy community. The trade occurs automatically via small computers, the ELEMENTS Gates, that are fitted in every household. This means that even in the post-feed-in tariff age, prosumers will have a simple and local way to sell their solar energy. An app gives all members of the community a live insight into the trading movements and where their energy comes from. Energy suppliers like you can operate this peer-to-peer energy community, transforming your business into an energy services provider.

Fraunhofer Institut für Solare Energiesysteme
OXYGEN TECHNOLOGIES is a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE). It arose from the Energy Systems Technology and the Smart Grids division under the leadership of Christof Wittwer. As our products were made ready for market, a series of laboratory and field tests assessed the practicality of the algorithms that form the foundations of our products.
Department of Computer Science, University of Freiburg
The software and algorithms at the core of our products were developed in studies at the Department of Computer Science and in particular at the Centre for Artificial Intelligence. These form an agent-based, decentralised energy trading system, an agent-based simulation of the energy system and a range of optimisation algorithms.
BMWi EXIST Transfer of Research
The foundation of our start-up in Freiburg was supported with over half a million euros of funding from the EXIST Transfer of Research programme of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. The programme supports outstanding, research-focused start-ups that involve costly development work. This sponsorship enabled OXYGEN TECHNOLOGIES to make its IT technology market ready and offer it today as a product.
OXYGEN TECHNOLOGIES received sponsorship from the EU Climate-KIC funding programme. Climate-KIC is an accelerator programme for start-up ideas that aim to reduce damaging greenhouse gas emissions and expand renewable energies. As well as funding for new staff, the OXYGEN TECHNOLOGIES team benefited above all from coaching and seminars.
